By the mid 60s it was apparent that radical new means would have to be introduced to facilitate the mass movement of people. Work commenced in 1969 on Hong Kong’s first cross-harbour tunnel. Here the pre-cast tunnel sections are assembled in readiness for submersion.

First to march through the Cross Harbour Tunnel was the Band of the Brigade of Gurkhas, led by Major H.C.R. Bently, performing at the tunnel opening on 2 August 1972.

The Governor’s fleet of cars were known as the “Crown Cars” from the emblem displayed instead of the conventional number plate. Hong Kong governors have always had fine cars since 1912 when Governor Sir Francis May became the second resident to own a car in Hong Kong.
